This is Ernie, my African Spurred Sulcata Tortoise. Ernie is about 28 yrs old or so. A very easy pet to have if you have the space. Easy but can be and is gross at times. lol We are in Michigan and he does very well dealing with the change of seasons.
In the spring and summer months, we keep him in the back yard, in his custom “playpen,” if it’s warm enough. I use a dog fence, (like a baby gate) to keep him safely in my yard and to keep an eye on him. Tortoises are surprisingly faster than you’d think. They like to dig or burrow under things. You can easily lose track of where they mosey on off to.
His diet is mostly grass and all the clovers he can find. Ernie is a portable lawn mower for sure.
Please educate yourself about Sulcatas BEFORE you buy one.
We’ve had Ernie since he was little baby, and was the size of a 50 cent piece. Now, he’s a heavy, dinosaur looking, poop machine.
As it gets colder, his body slows down along with his appetite to get ready for the colder weather months. We keep him inside under a heat lamp and or heating pad, in a huge dog cage with a washable bottom surface to it.
(Important to have a washable surface) He will go into a “half hibernation” type deal and can go without food for months. As long as you keep your tortoise healthy and educate yourself on preventing respiratory viruses, “colds” etc, they’ll live years beyond any dog or cat.
You’ll find that they have their own personality and attitudes at times too. Ernie has had an aggressive attitude the past two summers. He’s definitely on the lookout for a “girlfriend.” His basketball “girlfriend” isn’t working out so much. 😀
