Mental health problems cover a broad range of disorders. But all these disorders have a common characteristic and that is they affect the person’s personality, way of thinking and social interactions. Mental health problems are difficult to diagnose. They are not physical illness that can be diagnosed easily with just looking at the symptoms.
Factors of Mental Health Disorder
There are many factors affecting mental health disorder and not one factor can be pinpointed as the main cause. Instead it is a number of factors combined together to create a mental disorder. These factors are:
Some mental disorders have been linked to malfunctioning of nerve cell circuits that connect particular brain regions. Nerve cells within a brain circuit communicate through chemical called neurotransmitters. A miscommunication of nerve cells can cause mental disorder.
A severe psychological trauma suffered as a child could cause mental disorder. The trauma could be emotional, physical or sexual abuse. Other factors could be losing a parent at an early age and experiencing neglect. When a child is neglected he fails to develop the ability to build close and intimate relationships because he is always afraid of being left behind.
These include genetics, brain injury, infection, pre-natal damage, abusive use of prohibitive drugs and poor nutrition.
Certain stress-causing factors in the environment can trigger a mental health disorder. Death or divorce can lead a person into depression. There are people who cannot handle the pain of separation. Another stressor could be a dysfunctional family life. Living with people with whom a person cannot experience love and care, can make that person hateful and full of anger. This will ultimately lead to the development of negative feelings like inadequacy, poor self-esteem and loneliness.
Other environmental factors include changing jobs or school, social or cultural expectations and substance abuse by persons around him.
However, only a mental health professional can give an accurate diagnosis of the causes of a given disorder. It takes a professional help to correct or treat mental health disorder. But people around a person suffering from mental disorder can always help create an environment where the person can feel acceptance, love and care. It will not be easy to live with persons suffering from mental disorders. It will take patience and perseverance. But if they truly feel for the person, they will do anything to save him and make him well again.
